THE LABOUR party in Ilkley is calling for an extension to Article 50 and a People’s Vote to avoid the “catastrophe” of a no deal Brexit.

Keighley and Ilkley Constituency Labour Party held an emergency meeting to debate a motion calling for a second EU referendum.

The motion, which was passed overwhelmingly has now been sent to the Labour Leadership, the National Executive Committee and the National Policy Framework.

It states: “All other options have been exhausted: to avoid the catastrophe of a no deal on 29/3/19 Labour must now support an extension to Article 50 in order to facilitate a People’s Vote which includes the option of remaining in the EU.”

The motion was proposed by Ilkley Labour chairperson Kath Steward, who is standing in the local elections in May.

She said: “Our MP John Grogan is in favour of a second referendum and we hope this will support him in his efforts to bring one about. We believe it is the best way out of the gridlock that Parliament is in over Brexit.”

The local Labour party believes Brexit in any form will cost jobs, sharpen austerity and damage the NHS.
