THE charity Ilkley and District Good Neighbours is celebrating being awarded Approved Provider Standard by the National Council of Voluntary Organisations.

The award specifically recognised the work being carried out by the charity’s Befriending project, one of its services which helps older and less able people living independently in the area who may be lonely, or bereaved, and whose quality of life can benefit from regular visits by volunteers.

“We are absolutely delighted with this important recognition by a national organisation of the excellent work being carried out by our Befriending project, and I would like to thank our co-ordinator and her volunteer helpers for all their efforts in getting us to this stage,” said Judy Hutton, Ilkley Good Neighbours chairman.

“The Approved Provider Standard is the national quality benchmark, designed specifically for mentoring and befriending projects. It examines everything from the management of mentors and befrienders and the results they achieve, to safe working practices. The fact that we have been granted this award, after a period of rigorous assessment, is an encouraging acknowledgement of the work we do in the community.”

Ilkley and District Good Neighbours is an independent charity supported by donations and sponsorship. Apart from Befriending, its other projects include Shop Assist, Moving On, and the organising of special day out trips.
