A GUISELEY schoolgirl won the chance to go behind the scenes of a boy band’s music video after success in a Blue Peter competition.

Twelve-year-old Freya Gill was one of three out of hundreds of applicants to be picked to receive mentoring from the on-set engineers for New Hope Club’s music video of the classic, All I Want For Christmas.

Freya won the 12 to15’s category and was runner-up in Blue Peter’s Lights, Camera, Action! competition, run in collaboration with the band and with the Institution of Engineering and Technology.

The competition aims to raise awareness of the work engineers do within the music and entertainment industry.

Entrants were asked to submit a storyboard for a scene within the video as well as writing a paragraph about their favourite engineer. Freya’s engineering inspiration was Hedy Lamarr, an American actress and inventor who was commended for her work on wireless communications during the Second World War.

The competition was judged by members of the IET, including Orla Murphy, IET’sYoung Woman Engineer of the Year 2015, New Hope Club’s team and Blue Peter presenter Radzi Chinyanganya.

Freya said: “I’m really excited that my entry was recognised and rewarded in the Lights, Camera, Action competition. I love being creative, learning new things and New Hope Club so I’m really excited to meet the engineers that make the video.”

Orla Murphy said: “We saw a phenomenal response to the Lights, Camera, Action! competition, with hundreds of very high quality entries. As an engineer and musician, it’s fantastic to see young people demonstrating their creativity through engineering and we hope this competition has shown young people the variety of careers there are in engineering, including the music and audio industry.”

Radzi Chinyanganya said: “The standard of the competition was incredible across all age groups. It was fantastic to see so many creative ideas with the engineering behind them explained in great detail – it’s a great example of how engineering and creativity goes hand in hand.”

New Hope Club’s All I Want For Christmas video will be launched on Blue Peter on December 6, and there will be a live performance by the band on the show on December 20. The behind the scenes video will also be available on https://www.youtube.com/theiet from December 7.
