OTLEY’S MP has been urged to throw his support plainly behind a ‘people’s vote’ on Brexit.

Alex Sobel (Lab, Leeds North West) recently spelled out his position on the issue, stating he will not vote for Prime Minister Theresa May’s EU withdrawal deal.

Mr Sobel also said that he would back ‘any option’ that would keep the UK in the European Single Market and a customs union.

The Liberal Democrat Parliamentary candidate for Leeds North West, Kamran Hussain, has now written to the MP to ask him to pledge himself specifically to a ‘people’s vote’.

Mr Hussain said: “Surely as an MP, he should be able to say clearly what he is going to do. Alex needs to clearly commit to a people’s vote.”

In his letter to Mr Sobel Mr Hussain describes Prime Minister Theresa May’s EU withdrawal deal as unacceptable, adding: “Beyond voting against the deal in Parliament the ultimate decision should be made by the people.”

Responding, Mr Sobel said: "As I clearly stated last week I am in full support of a people's vote if it was to be presented in Parliament.

"I am not however, in control of what comes before Parliament and we are heading into unknown waters.

"That is why it is only responsible to outline what I would and wouldn’t vote for in every scenario."
