FUNDRAISING for “Sanctuary Suppers” to publicise the plight of refugees will take place in Horsforth this weekend.

A collection will be held after an Advent Sunday service organised by Horsforth Church Together, which will take place at 6pm on December 2 in St Mary’s Church on Broadgate Lane.

The service will be led by Fr Emmanuel Adindu , assistant priest in the parish of Our lady of Kirkstall. Fr Emmanuel, who is originally from Nigeria, previously had a parish in Malawi. Sanctuary Suppers arose out of a series of events in Horsforth last year publicising the plight of refugees especially those from Syria. The project, led by Rose McCarthy, leader of Leeds Refugee Council and Yorkshire Woman of the Year, ended with a celebratory supper in St Margaret’s Parish Centre at which the refugees cooked and served a supper of Syrian food.

A spokeswoman said: “So great had been the impact on both Syrian Hosts and their Leeds guests that Horsforth Churches Together feel they should raise funds for more suppers.”
