BELLRINGERS in Otley are preparing for a busy weekend when they will help the town mark the centenary of the Armistice.

All Saints Bellringers will sound the Parish Church's bells on the evening of Saturday, November 10 and then again on Sunday, November 11 when they will be rung half-muffled before the the 10am service.

The full bells will sound again at 12.30pm before a final peal, at 7.05pm, as part of the national Battle's Over - A Nation's Tribute event.

Tower Captain Meg Morton said: "It is thought that about 1,400 of Britain's church bellringers were killed in action during the First World War.

"Last year a campaign, under the name Ringing Remembers, called for the same number of new recruits to 'join up' to make up that number.

"Our new ringers Richard Bowman and Suzanne Phillipson, who have stepped into the breach and have been training hard, are aiming to take part in some or maybe all of these rings on Armistice Day."
