VISITORS to Otley Parish Church have been appreciating some poignant poems about the First World War.
Otley Poets Society member Barbara Marshall Corney got involved in the church’s efforts to mark the centenary of the Armistice by contributing to an appeal for knitted poppies.
Barbara ended up making 100 flowers for the massive display currently on show at Otley All Saints but wanted to do more.
She said: “When I saw the appeal for poppies it caught my imagination and the idea of purple poppies for the animals inspired me to do more.
“Thinking about what else I could do to bring the message home to people about the horrors of war inspired me to write the first poem.”
The results were Lest We Forget and Think Of The Animals. Barbara said: “I have had some brilliant feedback from the public.”
