CHILDREN at Westville House School have been learning about the importance of British values.

Respect, democracy, laws, individual freedoms and acceptance of those with other faiths are regarded as five key British Values. The children began the celebrations with a whole school British Values Day. They came to school in red, white and blue clothes and the school was decked out in union jacks. Younger children loved making wooden spoon ‘beef-eaters and also took part in building a giant Houses of Parliament. Some of the older children identified major British symbols such as red telephone boxes, double decker buses and fish and chips. Chef Julian even designed a very British lunch of giant Yorkshire pudding ‘toad in the hole’!

The Year 6 children spent time interviewing staff and other children to make a short film about people’s views on British values. They planned questions, rehearsed interview techniques and used Ipads to film short interviews.

Mrs Jules Coulthurst who planned the event said: “British values are so very important and represent what our country stands for. By incorporating many of these activities into the curriculum these values can be reinforced in a fun learning environment. The children were so interested and especially enjoyed their lunch!”
