AN Active Ageing Campaign is helping people in Wharfedale stay on their feet

NHS Airedale, Wharfedale and Craven Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) has been holding events across the district as part of a falls prevention campaign.

Shoppers in Keighley saw a free tai chi taster demonstration last week. The strength and balance session was provided by Huntun Tai Chi. Studies have shown how tai chi can help people aged 65 and over improve their posture, balance and general mobility; and increase muscle strength in legs.

Christchurch in Ilkley was also the location of an event focused on raising awareness of the steps people can take to reduce falls.

Enid Feather, the CCG’s clinical lead for self care and prevention said: “Older people are at higher risk of falling, around one in three 65 year olds and over fall at least once a year and one in two for people aged 85 and over.

“Falls that result in injuries can be very serious with over half of those aged over 70 ending up in hospital.

“With an increasing number of older people living in our district, it is important they are aware of the simple steps they can take to stay safe and keep on their feet.

“We want every older person to have the best opportunity to live and age well without fear of falling and injury.”

The vast majority of falls can be prevented by making changes in the home, including:

• immediately mopping up spillages

• removing clutter, trailing wires and frayed carpet

• using non-slip mats and rugs

• using high-wattage light bulbs in lamps and torches so you can see clearly

• organising your home so that climbing, stretching and bending are kept to a minimum, and to avoid bumping into things

• getting help to do things you’re unable to do safely on your own

• not walking on slippery floors in socks or tights

• not wearing loose-fitting, trailing clothes that might trip you up

• wearing well-fitting shoes that are in good condition and support the ankle

• taking care of your feet by trimming your toenails regularly and seeing a GP or chiropodist about any foot problems.
