VICTORIA Wilkinson has smashed two long-standing records in her most recent races.

The Hebden distance runner set new bests in the Burnsall Feast Fell Race and the Ben Nevis Race.

Ironically the two records she shattered had both stood since 1984.

At Burnsall she covered the course in 15min 58sec to knock 36 seconds off the time set by Carole Greenwood 34 years ago.

And last Saturday she took 23 seconds off Pauline Stewart’s record with a time of 1hr 43.01.

It was Wilkinson’s first attempt at the Scottish race and came two weeks after her 40th birthday.

It meant she won both the overall and women’s vet 40 prizes.

The Hebden runner, who also holds the course record for the demanding Three Peaks race, said: “I was persuaded to have a go at the Ben Nevis race by Peter Bland.

“He thought I would have a good chance of beating the record and I am pleased to have done that in my first attempt. It is a tough race but some light rain had bound some of the scree together making the descent a lot easier than it might have been.

“That was a big help in enabling me to beat the record.”

The international mountain runner says she has no more major goals for the remainder of the year, but that doesn’t mean she will be putting her feet up and plotting her race targets for 2019.

She is planning to compete in some Lakeland Trail runs and the record-breaking runner will be the runner her rivals will fear most.
