ALTHOUGH the general feeling was that Shane Spencer and Steve Gill presented themselves well at their Cougar Park meeting, their enthusiasm was not necessarily shared by the fans.

Lifelong Keighley Cougars supporter Ronnie Dunn said: "I'm positive that new guys have come in, because we needed it, but rugby league is struggling in general.

"Super League clubs are only bringing in 5,000 supporters per game, the RFL lost a lot of money last year, and there's uncertainty about the future."

Speaking about what Cougars need to do personally, Dunn suggested: "As a club, we have to step up and really sell ourselves.

"We could do a deal on selling season tickets, as local football clubs have done in the past. We need to get people back here.

"It has to be an event day for the fans though. People will not come flocking back just to watch rugby league, as the sport is dying.

"We need to move quickly. We have to get someone in who can push the events and we have to see the new owner's policy going forward.

"For people to sponsor the club, we have to see what those in charge are doing first."

Fellow supporter Brian Clough had an even simpler message, saying: "You only attract people to the club by winning games.

"Winning against Oldham but then losing to Coventry isn't going to bring people down here. We can sort out facilities and a supporters club but people won't come without a winning team.

"It all starts with what happens out on the field. This is where we're going wrong because it's not all about trying to attract folk off the pitch.

"The priority is players and building your side, first and foremost. That's what I'd have thought anyway."
