WITH just over five weeks to go before the start of Burley’s 10th Anniversary Summer Festival, preparations are nearly completed.

There’s going to be plenty of entertainment, activities, fun and games for all the family throughout the nine days of events. The Festival brochure is printed and will be delivered during the early part of this month throughout Burley. If you don’t live in the village copies will be available from local libraries and information centres or visit www.burleysummerfestival.org where there is a list of all events and booking information.

Lots of events like the Dog Show (August 18), Classic Show, Food Market and Craft Fair (August 19) and events in the park are free and require no booking but many others such as the Big 10th Anniversary Festival Party Night, evening music and drama events, some children’s activities and walks offered by Walkers are Welcome need booking. Tickets go on sale in Burley Library, Grange Road, Burley-in-Wharfedale, on Monday (July 16) from 2pm, then on line from 4pm. Further ticket sales will be held in Burley Library every Monday (July 23, 30, and August 6, 13, 2pm until 4pm) and Saturday (July 21, 28,and August 4, 11 (10am to noon) in the run up to the official start of the Festival on August 18.

Villagers and businesses can now enter the Scarecrow Competition. The theme this year is ‘Once Upon a Bookcase’. Whether fairytale or classic fable it’s up to you, but it would be fantastic to see Burley gardens full of Scarecrows depicting favourite characters or scenes from books. To enter, either as a business or a household, send your name address and contact details to burleyscarecrows@gmail.com or collect an entry form from Burley Library. Closing date for entries August 10. Back for its second year is the Great Burley Bake Off Competition. Th final will take place in Salem Church Hall alongside Burley Teas on Saturday, August 18. There is a junior and senior level, each with four categories, Creative Cup Cakes, Spectacular Sponges, Brilliant Breads and Inspired Others.
