THE district has paid its own poignant tribute to the RAF.

Buildings in the Bradford district were lit-up red, white and blue at the weekend to commemorate the association’s centenary.

The special lights featured on City Hall’s clock tower, at the Forster Square railway station arches and on Bradford Council building Margaret McMillan Tower.

The RAF’s birthday was on Sunday.

Lord Mayor of Bradford, Keighley councillor Abid Hussain, said: “Many Bradford-district families will have strong links with the Royal Air Force, from the past 100 years and right up to the present day.

“We wanted to honour these connections and show our support for the RAF as it celebrates and reflects on its history.”

A series of events is planned across the country – and overseas – to mark the anniversary.

Activities will range from a touring display of aircraft from the past century, to flypasts, a 100-day baton relay and the unveiling of new galleries at the RAF Museum.

An RAF100 Appeal has been launched, which is encouraging the public to get involved in the celebrations and raise money for association charities.

Air Chief Marshal Sir Stephen Hillier, chief of the air staff, said: “For a century, the brave men and women of the RAF have served their country selflessly.

“The centenary is a proud moment for the service and it allows us, as a nation, time to pause and reflect and to celebrate these wonderful achievements.

“I would urge everyone to get involved, by joining-in a fundraising event or hosting your own.”

Appeal chairman Simon Collins said the anniversary was “a unique opportunity” to commemorate the service and the sacrifice of those who had given their lives over the years.

He added: “Very few British people can look back at their family history over the past 100 years and find themselves untouched by the courage, capability and achievements of the men and women who served – and continue to serve – in our Royal Air Force.

“The RAF100 Appeal provides an opportunity for the public to show its appreciation and help support RAF charities.”
