OTLEY'S standalone Argos store has closed - and the business moved into Sainsbury's.

The move, as reported in this newspaper in January, is part of a national trend that started after the supermarket chain bought the Home Retail Group in 2016.

Otley's Sainsbury's store is now home to a digital Argos 'order and collect' outlet, while the catalogue retailer's former Boroughgate premises have been emptied.

All of the staff from the former shop have transferred over and an email has been sent out to customers confirming the move.

Reaction at the time of the original announcement was mixed, with some welcoming the change while others worried about a large retail space in town becoming empty.

The online response now that the move has actually happened has also been mixed.

Marion Dawson said: "It will be a nightmare at Christmas collecting Christmas presents, (and) in the car park as well."

Also posting on the Otley - Our Town Facebook page, Katie Stockell said: "Sainsbury's stock is now gonna be more limited than before."

Joe Scholey, however, disagreed.

He said: "Not really, they have over 5,000 items in stock in the Sainsbury's store and they run down the rest three times a day from Guiseley."
