A NEW Post Office is to open in Bramhope - ending a ten year gap in local service.

The new branch is set to open within the Christalya corner shop on Tredgold Avenue, near the A660 Leeds Road, on Wednesday, March 21.

Bramhope has been without a PO since the former outlet, on Breary Lane, was closed in 2008 as part of a 'rationalisation' drive.

Local councillors received a letter informing them of the new development on Thursday, February 8, and were quick to hail the news.

Councillor Barry Anderson, (Con., Adel & Wharfedale) said: "This is excellent news for the village and its residents.

"I really welcome the Post Office providing this service once again in Bramhope.

"It is also good news for the corner shop and newsagents business, as they had been concerned about the new proposed shop within the - 319 property - Miller Homes housing development that is coming.

"This should give them security.

"Most residents in Bramhope will be able to access the new Post Office on foot, given its reasonably central location, and with its hours coinciding with the retail business this will enhance the service that can be provided.

"I am pleased the Post Office has recognised the need for this, especially given the expansion of the village with the new development.

"It is a much needed service."

Councillor Caroline Anderson (Con, Adel & Wharfedale) added: "We really welcome this news and I know a lot of residents will be really pleased that once again Bramhope will have Post Office facilities in the village.

"It was a great loss when the former one on Breary Lane closed.

"Now that there are to be a number of new developments along the A660 between Adel and Otley, this retail business should benefit from the passing trade that will be attracted by having a Post Office in this location.

"It will be a good addition to the existing services in Adel and in Pool."
