OTLEY'S MP has signed a pledge to promote meningitis awareness among local students.
Greg Mulholland (Lib Dem, Leeds North West) will also be encouraging greater take-up of the meningitis vaccine after attending a Parliamentary reception organised by Meningitis Now.
The charity is campaigning to increase use of the lifesaving Men ACWY vaccine, available for free to first-time university students up to the age of 25.
It says that despite a 809 per cent rise in meningococcal (group W) cases over the past five years the uptake of the vaccine amongst the most vulnerable age group - between 14 and 24 - remains very low.
Mr Mulholland, who will be writing to doctors and universities to urge them to do more to persuade young people to get vaccinated, said: "The low uptake of the Men ACWY vaccine among this at-risk group of young people is very worrying.
"As we enter the peak season for bacterial meningitis I would encourage local GP practices and university leaders to do what they can to promote awareness and encourage improved take-up.
"It is vitally important students protect themselves with the Men ACWY vaccine and learn the signs and symptoms of the disease.
"It only takes a few minutes and it could save theirs or a friend’s life."
Meningitis Now's Chief Executive, Liz Brown, added: "We welcome Greg Mulholland’s strong stand and support in persuading GPs and universities to encourage students to protect themselves."
Up to a quarter of students carry the bacteria that can cause meningitis, compared to one in ten of the general population.
