OTLEY is commissioning a feasibility study into its potential for community renewable energy.
The Town Council has awarded a tender to Huddersfield company Dr Vicki Shaw and Associates Ltd to do the work.
The study, due to start in October and be completed by Christmas, will look at the town's potential for generating solar, wind, hydro and other forms of energy.
It will also give advice on different ways of delivering renewable energy projects, including from crowdfunding and direct investment.
Town council Chairman Councillor Ray Georgeseon (Lib Dem, Danefield) is also keen for residents to contribute - and is asking them to e-mail ideas to him at ray.georgeson@otleytowncouncil.gov.uk .
He said: "I believe this could be the start of a significant development for Otley in which in years to come we could become more self reliant in energy generation, using renewable sources that help reduce carbon emissions and boost the local economy.
"We have to do our homework first and see what our best options are."
A report on the study's findings is due to be given to the council's Policy and Resources committee early in the New Year.
