AN ANNUAL 10k race launched by a village school three years ago has become a firm favourite with fans of trail running.

Over the Odda was launched in 2013 to raise money for Hawksworth C of E Primary School, and since then it has become a hugely popular event in the local race calendar.

Runners are now limbering up for this year's event on May 14, with the adult section being sold out within the first few weeks of entries opening.

Race director, Emma Stoney, said: "I knew when I first had the idea of hosting a race from Hawksworth Primary School that the village was in a perfect location to offer runners a challenging but very scenic course.

"By holding the event in May, we know the woodland on the route is full of bluebells. It makes a stunning backdrop."

A brand new junior race has been introduced for the 2016 event.

Emma added: "We have always offered a one mile race for children aged eight to 11, but felt the older children were missing out. We have therefore created a race for them, which is two miles."

The junior races will take place at 9.30am, before the 10km race for adults. There are still places available in both junior distances and runners can enter via the Bookitzone.com website before May 7. The event costs £3 to enter.

Hawksworth Primary headteacher, Dale Norris, said: "Mrs Stoney and the rest of the team work hard to make this race such a success.

"Along with their dedication and also with the support of local landowners, such as the Pickersgills and the Ogden family, who kindly allow the race to cross their land, the school can be proud of creating such a huge community event that promotes fitness and a healthy lifestyle to our own pupils and so many others."
