THREE veterans helped to collect £30,000 for the Poppy Appeal in Aireborough.

Ernest Carr, who is 99, has done his bit to support the British Legion Appeal, along with George Robertson, and Derek Hartley, both 89.

The men are part of a wider team who have been collecting in Morrisons supermarkets and whose efforts – along with donations from schools, shops and businesses – have made this year’s total the best ever.

Derek has supported the appeal for more than 30 years. George is chairman of the Guiseley RBL branch. Ernest, who has volunteered for more than 20 years, laid the wreath at Guiseley memorial Garden.

George is a former Bevin Boy – working down the mines in a scheme created by the wartime Minister for Labour & National Service, Ernest Bevin.

Ernest is ex-Army and Derek was in the Navy.
