A woman's dream of trekking Kilimanjaro ended in disappointment when she had to pull out after breaking her ankle.

Tessa Moran, of Burley-in-Wharfedale, was taking part in the trek to raise money for the neo-natal unit at the Leeds General Infirmary and to fulfil a long held ambition to climb Kilimanjaro.

But now months of training and fund-raising have ended in misery after she was injured at the beginning of the five-day trek.

Mrs Moran, who used to work in a neo-natal unit in her native Zimbabwe, was taking part in a trek organised by the MedEquip4kids, when she was injured.

A spokeswoman for the charity said: "We have had some feedback from the tour operator and as far as I know I don't think it is too serious.

"I think she just tripped or something - it was just an accident. I think it was on the first or second day and she was taken to the hospital.

"She has a cast on her foot and she is back in the hotel now and is quite comfortable but unfortunately she cannot continue the trek.

"The tour operator has spoken to her and she is disappointed but in good spirits. It is just an unfortunate thing that has happened. She has worked so hard as well - it's such a shame."

Mrs Moran, who works with people with learning disabilities, is a keen walker and has taken part in the 25-mile Trollers Trot around the Grassington area. To help ensure the best possible fitness levels she had also been going to the gym every day.

As well as the effort she put into physical fitness Mrs Moran also put her heart and soul into raising sponsorship so that she could take part in the organised trek.

Despite her efforts she struggled to get company sponsorship, but she was given a boost when Rawdon company Airedale International presented her with a cheque for £300. When she finally reached her target she stressed she could not have done it without the support of friends and colleagues.

Before setting off Mrs Moran, who was taking a Yorkshire flag with her, said climbing Kilimanjaro was something she had wanted to do for a long time.

"It has been one of my ambitions and I would regret it later in life if I didn't do it," she said.
