THIS week's Picture of the Week comes from Linda Lee. It is in response to the request for pictures of the heron which has been spending time on the river Wharfe. This image was actually captured at Strid Woods at Bolton Abbey.

Mrs Lee said: "Interestingly, I wonder whether the thin bare twigs shown on one photo are of the bird cherry tree. I did notice several small bare trees and a bit of cobwebby stuff in this area, and didn't appreciate what this was until I read Jenny Dixon's Nature Notes of June 19, when she explains that it is an infestation of the bird cherry ermine moth."

She added: "Aren't we lucky to live in such a beautiful area?"

On the same day Mrs Lee visited Otley Wetland Nature Reserve with the Wharfedale Naturalists, where she saw swans and orchids including the bee orchid.

It seems the heron has been spotted by a number of readers. Others who sent in excellent pictures of the heron on the river Wharfe were Lyndon York, Maureen Pollard and Stephanie Tennent, who all saw the bird from the Old Bridge, Ilkley.
