A Menston schoolteacher was honoured for her services to physical education and sport at the annual Leeds Sports Awards.
Beyond Barbara Pounder’s contribution to the curricular and extra-curricular programme at St Mary’s School, her outstanding work developing young leaders and her significant contribution to the school’s work in South Africa were also noted.
Special mention was given to the SOS Club (Sport on Saturday) Barbara runs, which provides young disabled people with the opportunity to participate in sport. She has run this community club for the last fourteen years.
The Gala Dinner event was hosted by the BBC’s Tanya Arnold and was attended by over 600 guests representing professional and amateur sport.
The evening turned out to be a very special night for St Mary’s with student Isobel Palmer winning a Young Achiever Award and ex-student Sarah Lawn winning an award for her outstanding achievement in football for both participating and officiating.
