Pool-in-Wharfedale Art Group’s leader has been named the village’s honorary citizen for 2013.
Until recently a long-serving parish councillor, Patricia Walker helped get Pool’s Conservation Area bid – led by historian and fellow honorary citizen Pat Lazenby – adopted in 2009.
She was presented with the Pool Parish Council-run award, which invites people to nominate residents who have made an outstanding contribution to the community, at a Sunday civic service.
She said: “To be lucky enough to live in this lovely village is a joy.
“We have so much to be grateful for – two beautiful churches that work together and a parish council that works its socks off for the good of the parish. We have so many inclusive organisations and a welcoming and caring community in which I am very proud to be a part.”
Parish council chairman Councillor Hazel Lee said: “Patricia runs the arts club and has done lots and lots of work in the village and was instrumental in Pool becoming a conservation area. She is a very worthy winner.
“We had seven nominees this year and Patricia received the most votes.”
Coun Lee added that the civic service at St Wilfrid’s Parish Church, led by the Rev Rachel Wilson, was packed.
Lessons were read by Councillor Barry Anderson (Con, Adel & Wharfedale) and Coun Lee and guests included Otley Town Mayor Councillor Pam Gill and Honorary Alderman Graham Kirkland.
