An Aireborough landmark described as a “crumbling gem” has re-opened as a children’s nursery.
The Lord Mayor of Leeds, councillor Ann Castle officially opened Pebbles Nursery in Nunroyd House, Yeadon, by cutting a ribbon, along with her husband, Graham Castle.
She made a short speech to declare the children’s nursery open, saying: “I hope it will go from success to success.”
The opening was also attended by Guiseley and Rawdon councillors, councillor Pat Latty and councillor Graham Latty, who were impressed with the refurbishment of the building.
Nunroyd House was built in around 1890 for local mill owner and benefactor Jonathan Peate. It later became Brummel’s Nightclub before falling into disrepair.
Louise Robinson and Jenny Elstub, owners and managers of Pebbles nursery and pre-school, bought Nunroyd House last year and have rescued the building.
After six and a half months of construction work, they have restored as many of the original features as possible, such as the main stairwell banister and stained glass window, in addition to replacing most of the floor boards.
They also fitted a new roof.
The official opening saw many activities for children, such as face painting, pebble painting, a bouncy castle and cake stall and raffle in aid of Comic Relief.
James Riches from the FA attended to offer football games outdoors and Lisa Porter attended with her numerous bugs to show the children.
Louise said: “The activity room was completely full for the hourly bug sessions.
“The children really enjoyed it! We couldn’t have asked for a better day for the grand opening.”
Jenny added: “We had a lovely day of fun. The children from the local area were able to come and play in our beautiful nursery that we have lovingly created.
“We were also very pleased to show everybody what we have done to restore the building.”
“The children are at the heart of what we do at Pebbles and their safety and happiness is essential. I am so glad that so many children have settled in so quickly,” added Louise.
