THE sumptuous Polish love story Cold War is Ilkley Film Society’s next screening on Sunday December 1st (8pm at Ilkley Playhouse).
In late 1940s Poland, Zula bluffs her way into an audition for a state-sponsored folk music ensemble and catches the eye of Wiktor, the ensemble’s musical director.
A love story spanning three decades begins. Wiktor, under pressure to make the ensemble’s musical repertoire a showpiece for Stalinism, longs to flee to the West but the tough and practical Zula would rather exploit whatever opportunities come her way in Poland.
Director Pawel Pawlikowski began his career in British television but his first Polish film, Ida, made a big impression at the Film Society in 2015
Like Ida, Cold War is beautifully shot in black-and-white and has a rich musical content ranging from folk to nightclub jazz.
It was nominated for three Oscars and won Pawlikowski the Best Director award at Cannes.
