THE YORK Railway Institute Brass Band is coming to Yeadon Town Hall for the first time to play a Night at the Proms.

The event will take place on September 20 and 21and will feature Opera North’s Joanne Dexter on Friday night and Margaret Macdonald on Saturday.

Pam Beck, secretary for the Yeadon Theatre Company said: “We are absolutely delighted to be bringing the York Railway Institute Band to Yeadon. They are recognised and admired on the band circuit and it is an absolute pleasure to be working with them. We know our audiences will be wowed by their performance.”

York Railway Institute Band competes in the Championship Section in the North of England Region of the National Brass Band Championships of Great Britain.

Originally named Chaucer Street Mission Band The current band can claim a heritage going back to 1883.

It was the first band in its area to achieve Championship Section status, competing at the very highest level for many years.

A spokeswoman for the theatre company says many outstanding players have started their careers at the ‘Institute’ and have gone on to play for the very best bands and orchestras in the world.

Supporting the band along with soloists will be the Ilkley and Otley Choral Societies.

The evening will run in the style of the Last Night of the Proms, with classics including Jerusalem, Rule Britannia and Land of Hope and Glory.
