MORE Lancastrian guests are coming to Ilkley Soul Club with Garry Place and Shaun Callon set to join resident DJs Keith Hudson, Trevor Lofthouse, Danny Steel and Ian Smith on the decks.

Last month’s special guest was Glenn Walker Foster, who hails from Blackpool. Numbers were slightly down due to Mothering Sunday but there was still a healthy turnout to hear the Soul Maestro play a fantastic and eclectic two hour set, with some traditional northern tunes plus some soul hits and more contemporary sounds.

Garry and Shaun have run the very successful soul club based in Chorley, Northern Noise.

They have had numerous big name DJs at the club including Ian ‘Pep’ Pereira, one of the famous original spinners from the 1970s club Catacombs in Wolverhampton.

Originally they started at the famous St Marks in Blackburn, and just recently have been involved with Blackburn Oldies – very much a traditional northern soul venue with a terrific dancefloor.

Garry hails from Blackburn while Shaun is a native of Accrington, now living in Clitheroe.

Shaun said: “I started going to local northern soul events in Accrington as a 14 year old back in 1973.

“Accrington was a bit of a hotbed back in those days with three venues: the Spinning Jenny, the British Legion Soul Club and the Old Band Club.

“I was too young and my pocket money would not stretch to trips to Va Va’s in Bolton, where the famous northern DJ Richard Searling cut his teeth.

“However, when I started working I made it to the Casino in Wigan in early 1974 and attended regularly thereafter.”

He added: “Both Garry and I have always been keen record collectors and about six years ago I made the transition from dance floor to the decks.

“Garry has been DJing for about nine years.”

Resident DJ at Ilkley Soul Club, Ian Smith, said: “We are delighted to welcome Shaun and Garry back to Ilkley.

“They played here last year and went down very well. Their tastes are very much on the R&B and upbeat side, which is the tempo we try to set!”

This month’s club takes place at the Hollygarth Social Club on Leeds Road, Ilkley between 4pm and 9pm on Sunday, April 28.

Admission costs £5 on the door and all the music is played on original vinyl.

Ian added: “We are trialling the new times for the summer and we will be announcing our summer programme - which will include a couple of Saturday night events - at Ilkley on April 28.”
