AN AWARD-WINNING teenage singer from Otley has reached the final of a major talent contest.

Emeli Mumford made it through an audition, heat and semi-final to reach the ultimate stage of West End Calling, the UK’s national musical theatre singing competition.

The 17 year old, Prince Henry’s Grammar School student is one of 12 singers who will perform in the final at The Other Palace Theatre in London on Sunday, May 12.

Emeli has also, meanwhile, been offered a place for the third year running with the British Youth Music Theatre 2019 Company and will appear in its performance of Dickens Girls at the The New Wolsey Theatre, Ipswich in August.

Currently in rehearsals for Legally Blonde with Upstagers in Ilkley - she will play Kate in the show at The King’s Hall from July 10 to 13 - Emeli is also preparing to run three, one-hour singing workshops for children.

The move follows on from the success of her Dear Santa choir and fundraising single last year, and she hopes it will attract young people who are interested in learning a song with her.

The Sing Your Heart Out workshops will be held at St Mary’s Parish Centre, Burley-in-Wharfedale on Saturday, May 18 and be split to suit different age groups.

Workshop 1 runs from 11am to 11.45am and is for three to six year olds; Workshop 2 is from 12 to 1pm and is for seven to nine year olds; and Workshop 3 runs from 1pm to 2pm and is aimed at ten to 14 year olds.

The sessions cost £10, which includes a rehearsal and participation in a concert for friends, family and the public at Otley All Saints Parish Church on June 1. To find out more send an e-mail to Emeli at: emelimusic01@gmail.com .

In March Emeli, who uses her music to support charities, was named a Star Student in the Bradford and District Telegraph and Argus Schools Awards.
