NORMAN Shaw’s imposing 19th century church on the edge of Ilkley Moor provides a glorious sonic backdrop to the building’s magnificent pipe organ.
This ‘King of instruments’ was installed by the renowned 19th century organ builders William Hill & Sons. The four manual instrument is widely acknowledged as one of the finest of its kind.
Monthly recitals have been given at St Margaret’s ever since Christopher Rathbone was appointed organist and director of music in August 2009. Christopher’s programme on Friday, April 5th is devoted to masterworks by JS Bach and will be his 100th recital at the St Margaret’s console. Christopher is in fact an authority on the organ music of “the old wig”. During the 2002-03 season, he played every note of the great composer’s oeuvre in a marathon series of 36 recitals at Holy Trinity Church, Meanwood, Leeds.
St Margaret’s organ recitals are given on the first Friday of each month, from 12.30pm to 1pm.
Admission is free, but donations in support of the Church’s Music Fund and Choral Scholar Scheme are gratefully accepted.
