ILKLEY Film Society celebrates its 50th season on Sunday, February 10 (8pm Ilkley Playhouse) with a special screening of a film from its very first season, the much-loved musical The Umbrellas Of Cherbourg.
Jacques Demy’s film, featuring one of France’s greatest stars, Catherine Deneuve, is remarkable in that every line of dialogue is sung – but Michel Legrand’s legendary score is not classical opera but French pop.
The film’s most famous song, I Will Wait For You, has been covered by singers as diverse as Frank Sinatra, Louis Armstrong and Cher.
A modern French fairy tale, Umbrellas is about a garage mechanic’s love for an assistant in an umbrella shop, in the shadow of his call-up for two years service in Algeria (this is 1964). After many years in which only badly faded prints could be seen, the film’s original gloriously rich colours were restored in 2004.
Non-members are welcome as guests (£4) but are asked to phone Dave Howell on 01943 430097 to reserve a seat.
