MOUNTAINEER Doug Scott will be telling the dramatic story of the first ascent of The Ogre by himself and Chris Bonington at Ilkley’s Kings Hall and Winter Garden on November 8. This thrilling story is regarded as one of the most dramatic epics in mountain survival ever.

Doug, and that other icon of mountaineering, Chris Bonington, made the first ascent of The Ogre (Baintha Brakk 7285m) in the Karakoram in July 1977.

Their climb extended the boundaries of what had been achieved before at that altitude. It was 24 years before The Ogre was climbed again.

Doug will be telling a thrilling story of hard climbing, team work and survival against all odds, in his famously laconic and humorous style. The talk has been refreshed with the aid of photographs and material from diaries from other members of the team – Chris Bonington, Nick Estcourt and Clive Rowland - plus cine film and audio tapes recently discovered in an attic and made by the late Mo Anthoine on the expedition.

The evening will include a sale of Nepalese goods and Seasons’ Greetings cards, plus an auction of signed framed mountaineering prints, all supporting the post-earthquake reconstruction work of Community Action Nepal [canepal.org.uk]. CAN is a UK-based registered charity founded by Doug in 1995, which aims to help mountaineers support the mountain people of Nepal. Community Action Nepal was awarded the UIAA Mountain Protection Award in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia on 6 October.

Doug will also be signing copies of his posters and books: award-winning autobiography Up And About and his latest book, The Ogre – Biography of a mountain and the dramatic story of the first ascent, which has been nominated for the 2018 Boardman Tasker Award for Mountain Literature.
