STUDENTS from Bradford College are bringing the glamour to a new theatre production in Ilkley.

A trio of students from the college’s Faculty of Art and Creative Industries have helped ensure audiences at Ilkley Playhouse are transported back to the roaring 1920s for the production of the Noel Coward play, The Vortex, which opened on Tuesday.

Aamta Baleem and Sonam Junjuha have designed the set and are also assisting in co-ordinating costumes and props for the period drama.

The project marks a return to the Playhouse for the two students, who are studying for Higher National Diplomas in Production Arts. They worked on stage-construction, lighting and sound when Bradford College students put on a performance of The Doll’s House earlier this year.

Natasha Schnieden, who is studying on the college’s degree course in Media Make-Up and Special Effects, is heading up the make-up team, having designed the looks herself.

She, too, is no stranger to the Playhouse, having previously been involved in the productions of A Midwinter Midsummer Night’s Dream and the show My Boy Jack.

The Vortex was Coward's first great commercial success. Although it is set among the social elite of the 1920s, behind the gloss and glamour of the era there is a dark story of vanity, drug addiction and troubled relationships.

The Vortex is on at 7.30pm every night until Saturday in the Wildman Theatre at the Ilkley Playhouse.
