WHEN Ilkley Amateur Operatic Society decided that their 2007 productuion would be West Side Story' they realised that to do justice to this prestigious show it was essential that they engage a first-class production team together with a young cast.

To obtain the right Stage Director, Musical Director and a very experienced choreographer was going to result in a bigger than normal budget being required.

However, with the support of £1,000 sponsorship from Yorkshire Bank plc, together with generous support from local traders and other professionals and organisations in advertising in the programme the Amateurs are now satisfied that the additional costs will be covered.

This very popular show will run at the King's Hall, Ilkley, from February 20-24. The Director will be Jonathan Tate, a very experienced Director and actor who won the Best Director' award at the Wharfedale Festival for his direction at Ilkley of Oklahoma!'.

The music is in the capable hands of Jim Lunt, a freelance Musical Director who has done the past 14 pantomimes at Leeds City Varieties. As a composer he has written jingles for television adverts and he has written a children's musical. He has gathered a very talented orchestra to play the complex and difficult score.

Andrew Walton, the choreographer, started dance training at the age of six and began competing in ballroom and Latin American dancing at the age of nine., On finishing his competitive career Andrew is now a championship adjudicator.

All his experience contributes to the Latin American style required in West Side Story'. He has directed and choreographed for Ilkley in the past as well as having appeared throughout the area in many productions, both dramatic and musical.

Judith Ratcliffe, Chairman of the Society, said that the young and talented cast has brought an enthusiasm and incredible energy to rehearsals.
