ONE of the many men who died building Bramhope Railway Tunnel is remembered with a gravestone set into the wall of Yeadon Methodist Church.

James Myers was one of 24 railwaymen who lost their lives during the tunnel’s construction between 1845 and 1849. He is buried alongside his three-year-old daughter Harriet , who died less than three weeks later.

An inscription on the gravestone reads: “In memory of James Myers of Yeadon who came to his death by an accident in the Bramhope Tunnel on the Leeds & Thirsk Railway on the 14th day of April 1848 Aged 22 years.”

The picture is from the archives of Aireborough Historical Society.

In 1996 Tony Carter and Jack Nicholson were pictured at the White Rose Classic Motorbike Show in Ilkley.
