Otley Town 4 Wetherby Athletic2

WITH many local games being called off, there was a decent-sized crowd at the Old Showfield and they were treated to a cracking West Yorkshire League Premier Division match that included some top-quality goals.

Wetherby began the match strongly and took a deserved lead through a real pile-driver of a free-kick that gave goalkeeper Chris Brodie no chance.

It looked likely they would extend their lead as Town struggled to assert themselves. However, they found an equaliser through Farrell Hunt’s beautiful low curler, and better was to come when Scott Firth beat a couple of men before sending a lovely looped shot into the top corner.

Firth’s pace was by causing Wetherby all sorts of problems, and he broke the offside trap to race past an onrushing goalkeeper to give his side a two-goal margin at the break

The second half started in scrappy fashion, but Town were much the happier of the two teams with their two-goal cushion.

The game came to life in the 70th minute when the visitors gave themselves a lifeline by pulling a goal back through a narrow angled drive.

Again Town dug deep to keep Wetherby at bay, and made the game safe with another fantastic goal. Tenacious work from the outstanding Scott Cater saw him feed the ball to Dan Chadwick. He played a one-two with Harry Higgins before firing in low into the bottom corner.

This was a fine win for Town and a most enjoyable game. They have another home game on Saturday when they host Howden Clough in the League Cup (1.30pm).
