Guiseley’s Blue Square Bet North game with Solihull Moors on Saturday looks set to become an early casualty of the Arctic weather.

They are calling in a local referee to inspect the Nethermoor ground at midday tomorrow and the prospects are not good.

The pitch is still covered in snow and beneath it the surface is frozen solid.

After twice having their FA Trophy third round clash at Cambridge United postponed on Saturday and Tuesday – it is now re-scheduled for next Tuesday – Steve Kittrick's side are facing an increasing fixture backlog.

Chief executive Adrian Towers and a team of volunteers worked with the club’s groundsman to try and move some of the snow yesterday, but their efforts proved largely futile.

Towers said: “The volunteers were brilliant, but we would need a whole army of them just to move the snow.

“The pitch has about three inches of snow on it all over and beneath it the ground is rock solid.

“We took a look at one area which we had been able to cover and the frost covers are frozen to the pitch. I reckon it would take at about 15 men just to lift the cover off.”

It isn’t just the playing surface that is causing concern. The surrounds and the car parks also need serious attention.

Towers added: “Some of the snow started to melt on the terrace areas, but where it did the water has now frozen creating a lot of ice.

“One of the car parks is also a bit hazardous, so all round we face a huge battle.

“After seeing what things were like yesterday, and with more cold weather and possibly snow forecast, we took the decision to call for an early inspection.

“Solihull are due to travel on Sat- urday morning and the referee is coming from the north east. If the decision is made early there will be no need for them to travel.”
