Dolan’s men looking to clash with Vauxhall

Guiseley manager Terry Dolan makes no secret that his ambitions are to gain promotion but he must be more than a little satisfied with his team's progress in the FA Cup so far this season.

His charges have successfully negotiated two qualifying rounds, including a re-play, and the former Bradford City boss is under no illusions that further progress in the cup competitions (Guiseley also have to face FA Trophy, County Cup and League Cup games yet) could hinder his promotion bid.

He said: "At the moment it is not creating a problem, we are not too far out of step with league games played by our rivals but continued cup success obviously leads to a backlog of league games.

"It all depends on how far we progress in the cup competitions as to whether it would become a hindrance to our promotion ambitions but at the moment I am just looking at it as it is another game to give us an opportunity to improve, whatever competition it is in.

"We are happy with our results at the moment but we could do a lot better performance wise. With re-plays and mid-week league games we have not had a lot of time on the training ground and we are having to work on things in the next game rather than in training."

Dolan is looking forward to his side's third qualifying round FA Cup clash with Vauxhall Motors at Nethermoor Park on October 13.

"I am having Vauxhall watched on Saturday. They have not had the best of starts to the season but they do play in a higher league than us so it will be a big test for us," said Dolan.

Guiseley 1 Prescot Cables 0 A DOMINIC Krief goal in the first-half finally booked Guiseley's passage into the next round of the FA Cup after two scrappy encounters with Prescot Cables - a side Guiseley will have met three times in eight days by the time Saturday comes.

In this FA Cup second qualifying round Guiseley drew 1-1 at Prescot on Saturday, John Swift scoring their goal, and again in the re-play they produced enough chances to have won the tie handsomely.

Substitute James Hanson's failure to win a one-on-one with the keeper in the last minute of the game was unbelievable.

Hanson was not alone in his failures in either game - fellow striker Rob Pell, back in the Guiseley side after a lengthy injury lay-off, was again guilty of some glaring misses and Guiseley seem by and large to find it far easier to miss the target than hit it at the moment.

This win however sets Guiseley up for a home tie with Conference North side Vauxhall Motors in the third qualifying round on Saturday, October 13.

The watching Blue Square Conference Farsley Celtic manager Lee Sinnott could hardly have been impressed apart from the form of one of his old boys Dominic Krief who had a barnstorming game along with left-back Leon Henry.

Guiseley however will be happy to have made it through to the next round and hopefully another good pay day. Their reward for beating Prescot was £3,750 from the FA Cup prize draw fund and £5, 000 awaits the winners in the next round.

For this re-play manager Terry Dolan started with the team that finished the first game with Marc Smith and James Hanson on the bench making way for Rob Pell and Mark Bett up front.

Pell was first into action straight from the kick off as he brought a good save from Craig Bryan. Prescot replied through Gavin Lynch who went close.

As with Saturday Prescot harried Guiseley at every opportunity and chances for both sides proved few and far between. Pell once again brought Bryan to his knees after Nathan Hay's long throw and Scott Murphy looped a shot just over Steve Dickinson's goal.

The decisive moment came three minutes before the break as Dominic Krief pounced on a the loose ball, after Bryan had parried Pell's shot and he converted at the far post.

From the re-start Darren Byers had a pot from 20 yards that whistled past the post and after Pell had lost the ball in a swift counter attack, the ball eventually found its way to Lynch but Dickinson was down in a flash to smother his shot. Bryan once again denied Pell as he parried his low shot and gathered at the second attempt.

Substitute James Hanson should have wrapped it up for Guiseley deep into injury time as he beat the off-side trap but got too close to Bryan in a one-on-one and allowed the keeper to snatch the ball off his toes.

Guiseley: Steve Dickinson; Nathan Hay, Leon Henry (Sam Denton), Aron Wilford, Danny Ellis, Simon Sturdy, Dominic Krief, Richard Dunning, Rob Pell (James Hanson), Mark Bett (Marc Smith), John Swift. Subs not used: Dean Walters, Scott Reid.

l On Saturday Guiseley travel to Prescot again, this time for a UniBond League fixture.
