GUISELEY Academy continued their unbeaten run against National League teams to reach the final of the League's Champion of Champions competition.

A superb 3-1 win over Oxford City sees Dave Currie's Guiseley boys reach the final, which ironically will be played at Oxford City's ground on Wednesday, where they will meet Boreham Wood, last year's Champion of Champions.

Wood progressed to the final, which kicks-off at 2pm, by beating Sutton United on penalties.

Guiseley gained their place by virtue of two sublime free-kicks along with a well-executed goal from a length-of-the-pitch team move.

Oxford started the stronger in the game played at Ben Rhydding Sports Club but offered very little in terms of a threat.

Guiseley took the lead with a beautifully struck free-kick from George Gomersall from the left side of the penalty area.

This was quickly followed by a good move that saw the young Lions double their advantage with a neat finish from their leading scorer Kayle Price.

City pulled one back in the second period but Guiseley’s two goal advantage was restored just before the end with another well-struck free-kick, this time from Nathan Banton.

Academy manager Dave Currie has seen his charges enjoy their best-ever season after finishing runners-up in their divisional league a number of times before making the breakthrough this season taking the title on goal average in a winner takes all final league game against the also unbeaten South Shields.

Currie said: "I am really proud of the lads, they are a great bunch. We can shout, cajole and encourage all we like but once they cross that white line it is down to what they do. They have done it time and time again and we are really proud of them."

Currie picked out Nathan Banton, scorer of the third goal, to typify what his squad is all about saying: "Nathan is from Ashby de la Zouche and he made the decision to fund himself and move up from there to live with family in Guiseley so that he could play for the Academy. That is the sort of dedication we have in this squad."

Of facing Boreham Wood in the final Currie said: "They are obviously a good team being winners of their own league and having won Champion of Champions last year but our boys can be proud of what they have achieved so far being unbeaten and scoring over 100 goals in their league campaign, and I believe there is more to come from this great bunch of lads."
