Vanarama National League: Boreham Wood 3 Guiseley 1

GUISELEY'S season fizzled out long ago but they were left rooted to the foot of the table after a defeat on the road on the final day.

The Lions bade a fond farewell – for the time being – to the Vanarama National League with a 3-1 defeat at promotion-chasing Boreham Wood after a three-year stay at the top table of non-league football.

The Woods started on the front foot as they looked for the home victory that would book them a place in the play-offs, while being mindful that a home defeat to the basement boys could have left them outside the top seven.

Driven by that, the home side raced into a two-goal lead and it could have been more as they dominated the early stages.

They broke the deadlock in the third minute when the Lions’ defence failed to deal with a corner and Bruno Andrade pounced to net his 20th goal of the season.

Guiseley were under intense pressure soon after but Elliot Green headed an effort off the line before Lions’ keeper Joe Green made a fine save.

It only delayed the Woods, however, and they doubled their lead in the 16th minute, with Morgan Ferrier turning Andrade’s pass home from close range.

The Lions got a foothold in the game midway through the first half when Dayle Southwell reacted quickest after a cross from John Rooney hit the inside of both posts.

Andrade tested the visitors’ keeper again soon after, and Ferrier had a strike ruled out for offside just before the hour.

Morgan Smith finally restored the home side’s two-goal advantage midway through the second half with a curling shot.

Boreham Wood finished fourth and face AFC Fylde in the first play-off game.

Fylde were held to a goalless draw at Wrexham, but finished above Dover Athletic on goal difference.

The stats for Guiseley make grim reading as they won just seven of their 46 games and scored only 44 goals throughout the campaign.

They were left four points adrift at the foot of the table with a total of 33, which was 16 fewer than Barrow, who just escaped the drop.
