Vanarama National League: Torquay United 3 Guiseley 4

GUISELEY'S penultimate fixture in the Vanarama National League was a memorable one as they edged a seven-goal thriller at Plainmoor against fellow relegated club Torquay United.

It was a high-octane game, despite both clubs already knowing their fate, and the Lions’ win was even more remarkable as they played 91 minutes with ten men!

Guiseley centre back Harry Flowers was shown a straight red card for denying a goal-scoring opportunity in the third minute, and there were four minutes of stoppage time played before the final whistle.

Flowers’ early foul saw him tugging back Seagulls forward Elliott Romain, who dusted himself down to take the resulting penalty, but saw it saved by Joe Green.

Minutes later, Guiseley broke the deadlock as Dayle Southwell fired in after Curtis Morrison’s lightning break.

The Seagulls were soon on terms when Rhys Healey netted the first of his hat-trick after another rapid counter-attack.

Torquay enjoyed a good spell after the goal, with Green forced into a fine save, a header flashing just over and Victor Nirennold hooking an attempt off the line.

The Lions than re-took the lead when Will Hatfield chipped Seagulls keeper Vincent Dorel.

In the second half, Guiseley opened up a 3-1 lead on the hour when Rowan Liburd met a John Rooney cross with a header that looped over Dorel into the top corner.

Healey headed his second following a 72nd-minute corner but, with the home side pushing forward in search of an equaliser, Liburd netted after a neat turn and shot.

Healey wrapped up the scoring four minutes from time when he planted a header past Green to convert a Romain cross.

A group of 20 Guiseley supporters made the long journey to the south coast to cheer on their side in the re-arranged game and their sacrifice didn’t go unnoticed.

Interim manager Sean St Ledger said: “A big thank you to the Guiseley fans for making the long trip to Torquay – glad we could give you a win.”
