Guiseley 0 Maidstone United 0

A HOME goalless draw against struggling Maidstone United was not enough to lift Guiseley off the foot of the table but they are still clinging onto their National League status.

The first relegation was confirmed however as Chester, the side immediately above Guiseley, cannot now climb out of the danger zone after a 2-0 home defeat to Tranmere Rovers.

But the Lions couldn’t take advantage of a visit from the Stones who ended a three-game losing run with the point at Nethermoor.

Caretaker boss Sean St Ledger accepted Saturday’s result but felt that his side were a little uninspiring.

He said: “We had a good amount of opportunities, but so did they really so a draw was probably the fair result.

“I would say that we lacked a bit of spark, possibly, with most of our chances coming from mistakes by them (Maidstone). We didn’t really create but having said that we did have enough opportunities.

The Stone’s didn’t look like a side low on confidence after three straight defeats and came at the home side.

Lions’ keeper Joe Green parried a good effort from Delano Sam-Yorke around his post for a 15th minute corner.

Ash Palmer was Guiseley’s next hero, doing exceptionally well to clear Michael Phillips’ back post header off the line.

The Lions’ best efforts came from Kevan Hurst who had two good first half shots.

Chances for the home side were few and far between for most of the second half but the visitors were still pressing.

Seth-Nana Twumasi fired just over while Green kept out shot from Stones’ skipper Stuart Lewis.

Green’s best save came in the 67th minute when he expertly tipped Blair Turgott’s header onto his bar.

Substitute Rowan Liburd had two late shots, but it was the visitors who almost nicked all three points.

In the third minute of stoppage time, Joe Anderson unleashed a thunderbolt of a shot that clattered a relieved Green’s bar on its way over.

Guiseley will be in action on Tuesday night when Dagenham & Redbridge are the visitors to Nethermoor.
