A DAYLE Southwell goal deep into stoppage time gave relegation threatened Guiseley an unexpected and confidence-boosting three points at Hartlepool United.

The Lions had not won away this year and the Pools were on a run of three consecutive Vanarama National League victories.

The home side must have thought that they had secured another point as they entered the fourth minute of time added on but Southwell remained switched on.

Pools defender Louis Laing failed to deal with a long through ball and Southwell raced through before beating home keeper Scott Loach to send the 64 strong Guiseley contingent in the 2,634 into raptures.

It was atonement for Southwell who could, and perhaps should, have scored just after the hour mark when he shot wide.

For Laing it was a double dose of agony as the big defender had gone closest for the home side when they were on top in the first half, planting a header to Blair Adams’ 38th minute corner just wide of Joe Green’s net.

Caretaker Guiseley manager Sean St Ledger was delighted, he said:, “The last-minute goals are always the best and I think it was much deserved.

“I think Dayle had a couple of chances throughout that game. The first half they caused us quite a few problems with the shape they had, they played with a diamond in midfield, but we came in at half time and spoke about it.

“We made a couple of changes to get a couple of more experienced players out there but I thought everyone who played, everyone who was here, was absolutely fantastic.

“I can’t ask for any more from them and I think on Friday the performance wasn’t up to the standards that we’ve set ourselves but today it was fantastic and I’m just so pleased for the players that they got the three points out of it because of the hard work they put in.

“You only get confidence from winning football games and this should lift us. We’ve got back to back home games now and hopefully that will push us forward.”

Meanwhile, Farsley Celtic and Brighouse Town were left kicking their heels after postponements in the Evo-Stik League.

The Celts' home game against Whitby Town in the Premier Division was subjected to a late call-off, while the winter weather also accounted for Brighouse's match at Ossett Town.

That was one of ten from 11 scheduled Division One fixtures to bite the dust.
