Vanarama National League: Aldershot Town 6 Guiseley 0

GUISELEY were hit for six as Aldershot Town consolidated their place at the summit of the early Vanarama National League table.

The Shots lived up to their nickname at the EBB Stadium as they peppered Jonny Maxted’s goal, and turned around 4-0 up after two late first-half goals shattered the Lions’ spirits.

Aldershot were beaten in the play-off final at the end of last term but have set down an early marker, and yesterday's win leaves them as the only club in the division with a 100 per cent record.

They won at home in midweek 3-2 against Torquay United after opening their season with a 2-0 win over newly-promoted FC Halifax Town at The Shay.

They have therefore rattled in 11 goals and conceded just two in their first three games.

Guiseley might have taken the lead but Frank Mulhearn headed Kevan Hurst’s tenth-minute cross off target.

They suffered a sucker punch midway through the first half as Shamir Fenelon blocked a John Rooney effort and, from the counter-attack, Matt McClure curled a shot that went in off the post.

The Lions had the ball in the net shortly after but Mulhearn’s dinked header that converted Hurst’s cross was ruled out for offside.

The game soon got away from the visitors as Shots skipper Callum Reynolds doubled the home side’s lead before Jim Kellermann made it three and Fenelon netted in first-half stoppage time.

Rooney, who had picked up a yellow card in the first half, was replaced minutes after the break as Kayode Odejayi made his competitive Guiseley debut.

Lee Molyneux sent in a shot that Jake Cole took with ease on a comfortable afternoon for the Shots keeper.

James Rowe made it a nap hand with a daisy cutter from just outside the area that nestled in the bottom corner of Maxted’s net, and, having begun the carnage with the first goal, McClure ended the scoring with a glancing header.

Guiseley boss Adam Lockwood later apologised to the fans, saying: "It's hard, we came in and prepared we played a very good Aldershot side.

"We lost battles all over the pitch, we felt we could get a foot in the game but we didn't.

"I'd like to apologise to the Guiseley fans. We have to turn things round and go again.

"There were areas we changed things but in open play they pulled us apart, it led to tiredness and we just couldn't recover.

"When you get beat, you need a reaction. We are in this game to bounce back, don't feel sorry for yourself and go again."

The Lions host Tranmere Rovers, who are also looking to bounce back after a defeat, on Tuesday.

Rovers have banked four points from a possible nine. However, Guiseley are second from bottom after taking just one.
