JAMES Wesolowski has no doubts about Guiseley's ability to continue climbing the table ahead of Saturday's trip to Aldershot.

The Lions drew 1-1 at home to Gateshead on Tuesday in a result which lifted them off the bottom of the National League and above North Ferriby United on points difference.

Much-travelled midfielder Wesolowski made his debut after being reunited with Adam Lockwood, who he played with at Oldham, and took heart from his new team’s performance.

Simon Walton’s second-half penalty put Guiseley on course for a precious victory but Gateshead hit back with four minutes remaining to level the scores.

Wesolowski said: “To give away a sloppy goal from a throw-in is disappointing, but from what I'm hearing it's sloppy goals like that which is costing us at the minute.

“It's an easy thing to rectify and it's not like we are playing badly – we are playing very well so it's just about fixing things up like set-plays.

“I was saying to the boys in the changing room afterwards that I can't believe they are down at the bottom.

“I was actually very impressed by some of the football that was played.

“Pretty much the whole team was comfortable in possession and I thought we played some nice football in the second half in particular and were a threat throughout.

“The disappointing thing was not getting a clean sheet.

“If we had managed that, we would have taken the three points but I'm excited for the rest of the season and hopefully we can start picking up wins.

“If we can rectify little things, then I'm sure we'll be fine. Draws are okay but we want to be getting three points.

“Most of the sides in this league are evenly matched so if you can be consistent then it's an opportunity to climb the table.

“It's just about finding that consistency. I'd back myself and the team to get out of trouble.”

Sydney-born Wesolowski left League One side Shrewsbury in the summer and has previously featured for Leicester, Peterborough and Oldham, as well as Dundee United and Hamilton.

The 29-year-old, who played 90 minutes in midfield, added: “I really enjoyed it and felt comfortable out there.

“Simon Walton, Will Hatfield and Alex Purver made the game easy because they were always available and scrapping for the ball.

“Locky got in touch and obviously I knew him from my Oldham days.

“He's a great lad and was a real leader on the pitch, so he's my kind of guy.

"As soon as he came calling, I saw it as a good opportunity to go and play some games and prove that I can still do it.”
