Guiseley 3 Burscough 2

THERE was a huge collective sigh of relief around Nethermoor as Guiseley stumbled through to the FA Trophy second round with a nervy replay victory.

The Lions struggled in the opening stages and it was no shock when the Linnets broke the deadlock with Liam Caddick netting a fine shot.

The home side levelled when Gavin Rothery netted from the spot after Nicky Boshell had been fouled in the area.

They went ahead in fortunate circumstances when Rothery’s low centre was turned past his own keeper Calvin Hare by Matty Devine.

The Lions took a 3-1 lead into the break after Tom Craddock scored in stoppage time.

The visitors made it a tense finish when substitute Paul Jewell scored late on but Mark Bower’s men held on to clinch an away tie at Dulwich Hamlet on January 16.

At the Shay FC Halifax Town cruised past Tamworth 5-0 with Kingsley James opening and closing the scoring.

The other goals came from Shaquille McDonald, on debut, skipper Nicky Wroe and substitute Conor Hughes.

Tomorrow it’s the turn of Bradford Park Avenue to try to join their neighbours in the second round but they will have to take out one of the National League big guns to do it. Lincoln City make the journey to the Horsfall Stadium for a rearranged tie following Saturday’s postponement.

The Imps were just as frustrated as Martin Drury’s Bradford when the initial tie was off due to a waterlogged pitch. Lincoln have been inactive for 11 days while Avenue have played one match in that spell so will hope to be less rusty than their visitors.

Thackley and Silsden were both denied home games as the weather continued to cause problems. Thackley were due to host Pontefract Collieries in the Toolstation Northern Counties East Premier Division while Silsden should have been at home to AFC Blackpool in the Men United League Cup.
