The Emirates FA Cup fourth qualifying round replay: Guiseley 1, FC Halifax Town 2

(after extra-time, 1-1 90 minutes)

MARK Bower’s Lions will not be hosting Sky Bet League Two Wycombe Wanderers in the first round of the FA Cup after neighbours FC Halifax Town edged last night’s replay.

Guiseley had wrestled home advantage from their Vanarama National League counterparts in the fourth qualifying round but, despite Adam Boyes netting his third goal of the tie, they could not make it pay.

The first meeting at The Shay last Saturday ended 2-2 after a late fightback by the Lions and Boyes’ two goals in the last 16 minutes.

Last night's replay was much closer, and more enthralling and agonising for both sides in equal measure.

Guiseley thought they had drawn first blood when Tom Craddock netted a quarter of an hour in but an offside flag curtailed celebrations.

Home keeper Steve Drench was soon in action though, and he showed all of his trademark quick reactions and agility to palm Kevin Roberts’ glancing header over the bar.

Halifax did make the breakthrough soon after though as Roberts turned provider. His excellent cross found Sam Walker, who flicked the ball past Drench.

Town’s former Bantams keeper Matt Glennon was also tested in the first half but he matched Drench, diving acrobatically to turn a shot from the home side’s Will Hatfield round his post.

Bower made a change at the break, bringing on Ryan Toulson for on-loan Mansfield Town right back Liam Marsden.

The match continued to be poised on a knife-edge, and both Drench and Glennon again made telling contributions.

Drench denied Jordan Burrow twice, while his opposite number saved a Boyes effort and was relieved to see a Craddock shot go narrowly wide.

Boyes did get his goal, and it was a poacher's strike after the Shaymen’s defence failed to deal with a 75th-minute corner.

The first half of stoppage time was end to end but the drama was not finished there as, just with minds turning towards a penalty shoot-out, Halifax’s James Bolton popped up with the winner.

With a little under six minutes of extra-time remaining, he fired in a shot from distance that was defelcted, and it was enough to book Darren Kelly’s side a home tie against Wycombe Wanderers on Sunday, November 8 (2pm).
