Bradford Park Avenue 3, Guiseley 1

Guiseley may have been promoted last season but Bradford Park Avenue were not intimidated as they put one over them in a deserved pre-season friendly victory.

Avenue were left behind in the National North when the Lions earned promotion via the play-offs last May but Bradford took four points off them during that campaign and they extended their bragging rights on Saturday.

In typical derby fashion, former players came back to haunt their old employers as James Walshaw netted twice for Avenue, while Nicky Boshell struck Guiseley's late first-half reply.

Avenue skipper Simon Ainge was fortunate it was a friendly fixture because, had it been a league game, he would have been sent off midway through the first half. The centre back was the last man when he tugged Adam Boyes back on the corner of the area.

Boshell took the resulting free-kick and, though Avenue keeper Jon Stewart fumbled it, he grabbed the ball at the second attempt. Guiseley were on top at the time and continued to dominate until the 36th minute, when the home side broke the deadlock.

The Lions defence was static as they awaited an offside flag when a through ball found Walshaw in space. The former Guiseley, Halifax and Farsley Celtic striker played to the whistle, which didn't come to the Lions' rescue, as Walshaw coolly slotted past Steve Drench.

Avenue doubled their lead just before the break when Walshaw got his head to a cross but again there was a question of offside. The home side didn't take that two-goal lead into the break as they conceded a free-kick just yards outside their own area in stoppage time and Boshell curled it around the wall into the unguarded side of Stewart's net.

The second half was less fluid as both Bradford boss Martin Drury and his opposite number Mark Bower made several changes, which disjointed the game and affected the performances of their teams.

Avenue sealed their win with four minutes to go when substitute Chib Chilaka put the result beyond doubt. The striker has been hampered by a slight injury in pre-season but last season's top scorer showed he has lost none of his sharpness as he netted from close range after Chris Haworth had headed down Adam Mather's inswinging cross.
