Guiseley 1 Bradford Park Avenue 2

Bradford Park Avenue hauled themselves out of the relegation zone in the Vanarama Conference North when they upset the odds to win at high-flying neighbours Guiseley thanks to a last-minute goal from Richard Marshall.

Lions boss Mark Bower had warned that the formbook goes out of the window in derby games and his words proved to be prophetic as Avenue – who were second bottom at the start of the night – beat their fifth-placed hosts.

In typical derby fashion, former players haunted their erstwhile employers as ‘old boys’ played a big part in both first-half goals – the sides turning round all square at 1-1 after an early penalty and a late first-half free-kick.

Danny Boshell was fouled in the area by Luke Dean but it was his brother Nicky - a former Avenue player - who placed the ball on the spot before stroking it past John Danby.

The home side’s Liam Dickinson sent in a couple of decent shots but one drifted wide while the other was dealt with by Danby.

Opposite number Steve Drench was soon put to work by Avenue’s Paul Walker and was beaten by former team-mate Simon Ainge, who got his head to a 43rd-minute corner.

The second half was a ding-dong affair, with chances at both ends, and the drama went right to the wire, with Richard Marshall volleying in the 89th-minute winner to convert an Alex Pursehouse corner.
