GUISELEY manager Mark Bower has paid tribute to his goalkeeper Steve Drench as the Lions look forward to a first-round FA Trophy tie at home to Chorley a week on Saturday.

The 29-year-old shot-stopper saved a second-half penalty in their third-qualifying round replay at Rushall Olympic on Tuesday night when the visitors were only leading 2-1.

Bower said: "It is reckoned that nine penalties out of ten are scored but Steve saves about five of every ten that he faces, which must be right up there.

"You don't like giving penalties away but there seems a fair chance that Steve will save them."

Drench guessed the right way when confronted by striker Aaron Williams from 12 yards, and Guiseley ended up winning.

Bower added: "It was never a penalty in a million years by the way. The referee had given us one a few minutes earlier and I felt that he was evening things up.

"Both players went in for a high challenge but Ryan Toulson said afterwards that he never even touched him. Their players then went up to the referee."

Chorley have maintained their momentum after winning the Evo-Stik Premier Division title last season and are currently fourth in Vanarama Conference North, one point and two places below Guiseley, albeit with a game in hand.

Bower said: "It will be a difficult tie as they are not used to losing matches. Also it will be a chance for both of us to have a look at each other as we haven't played in the league, and they should bring a few over with them so it should be a good atmosphere."

Guiseley visit Chorley on Saturday, February 7, with the return at Nethermoor on Saturday, April 18 being the Lions' last home match of the regular season.

Bower will be without both Danny Lowe and Wayne Brooskby due to five yellow cards on Saturday, when Guiseley are at sixth-placed Stockport County.

"It will be the biggest game of the season for us in terms of attendance, with them being a former Football League club," added Bower.

Guiseley have confirmed that former Stockport County and York City defender Jameel Ible has left by mutual consent.

He was brought to Nethermoor by former boss Steve Kittrick but has found first-team opportunities hard to come by, and Bower said: "Jameel found the physicality difficult but he really needs to be playing regular first-team football."
