Gloucester City 1 Guiseley 3

GUISELEY crossed the finishing line in comfort after Gloucester City ended what had been a close game with nine men.

The Tigers had used all three of their substitutes before they lost Spencer Hamilton to injury around the 70-minute mark and then four minutes from time Billy Jones saw red for a second bookable offence.

The Lions made the game safe after that, with Adam Boyes tucking in from close range in the last minute.

It was a disappointing end for the hosts, who remain in the relegation places in Vanarama Conference North.

Guiseley consolidated their third place with the victory ahead of Tuesday’s home clash with fellow promotion candidates Soulihull Moors.

Lions boss Mark Bower was pleased to finally get something from Whaddon Road. He said: “I was obviously pleased to get the win. It must be the fourth or fifth time I’ve been there with Guiseley and I’ve never gone away with three points before.

“They are a good side but we knew how they would set up and it was good to get the early goal. It was a bit of genuine quality from OJ (Oli Johnson) that forced the mistake for the own goal.

“They had an extra man in midfield but Shane Killock and Danny Ellis mopped up everything against their one man up front every time the ball went forward. We conceded a second deflected goal of the week and we thought the luck was going against us again but it got easier for us after the injury to their player.”

The Lions had taken a ninth-minute lead when Johnson’s cross, intended for Boyes, was turned into his own net by Matt Williams. The Tigers responded right on the half-time whistle when Nathan Modest’s cross took a heavy deflection off Danny Lowe.

Just over a minute into the second half the Lions were back in front. Gloucester keeper Jasbir Singh had parried Ryan Toulson’s first effort but he drilled the loose ball home.

Guiseley should have put the game to bed much earlier but Danny Boshell placed the ball wide when in front of a gaping goal and Wayne Brooksby had a shot superbly saved by the excellent Singh.
